Animals farmed (2018-)

“The Animals farmed project is an investigative series examining issues around modern factory farming, food production and animal welfare,” both “examining the global impact of intensive farming practices and exploring sustainable solutions.”

Supported by the Open Philanthropy Project, and collaborating with the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, the series covers shifts to farming practices happening around the world, especially those that are un- or under-reported. Recent highlights include reports on: Mink farms and Covid-19; facial recognition software for Chinese pigs; Walmart’s beef and deforestation in the Amazon; and - of interest to my own research - the declaration of Powys as the “poultry capital of Wales.”
